the poet

Denton resident, Karla K. Morton, was born in Ft. Worth, Texas and attended college at Texas A&M University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.

Morton, who now lives in Denton, Texas, has written in the children's, young adults and adult genres as well as in song and poetry... but her main love is poetry. Poetry in all forms. She believes that poets have the honour of expressing into words the emotions of life.

"Poetry," Morton says, "is life's essence... it's simply impossible for me not to write."

Morton, a wife and mother of two teenagers, is a founding
member and officer of the Denton Poet's Assembly
(a branch of the Poetry Society of Texas) and
is on the Board of Directors for the
Greater Denton Arts Council. She is a member of the
Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators
and the Nashville Songwriters Association International.

Morton, who is always in search of new ways to promote the
craft of poetry, has had several art showings of her work in the
visual spectrum as well— her poetry written in calligraphy and painted
onto very large canvases by calligrapher and friend, Kim Cathro.

Karla has also been selected along with some of the finest Texas poets to be included in the much anticipated 2008 Texas Poetry Calendar.  You can purchase this calendar through Dos Gatos Press.

Morton has recently completed work on an Audio/Book CD project with Canadian composer Howard Baer, recording and producing one of her epic poems. Baer, who has produced hundreds of CDs, written numerous TV themes and scores, and worked on several IMAX films, read Morton's story and was inspired to compose a musical score to accompany her work— including performances by some of the finest Celtic musicians in the world.

"It's an amazing project," Morton said. "and it's such an honour to be working with someone as incredibly talented as Howard Baer."

The result is a unique and beautiful mix of poetry, story and music.

Karla MortonThe poem, titled Wee Cowrin' Timorous Beastie is a Scottish epic story written in rhyme about a 17th century Scottish pirate named John Murray and his love, Vashti. They are separated for years, because her faither denies their marriage until John can make his fortune to claim her hand. While they are apart, John has given his love an enchanted brooch to protect her, but when the village falls into natural disaster, the villagers turn against her, blaming their misfortune on her and the magic brooch. It's an exciting story about longing and love and the mystery of the beautiful foggy dew of Scotland. Morton's CD, also titled Wee Cowrin' Timorous Beastie will be released April 2007.

Morton's poetry is registered and copyrighted through the Library of Congress.

some thoughts

Irish Royalty
Queen Vashti Pearson Early

My mother and her cousin
traced one side of our geneology
straight back and unfiltered
to Ireland.

That explains a lot of things...
Like my love for rain-drenched sod
and green rolling hills;
stout whiskey
and hot tea.
Like my passion for poetry
and music,
and long flowing hair
(as well as my unwavering belief in magic).

Sister to the Faeries.
    Great-grandaughter to an Irish Queen.

No wonder I've always felt like royalty.

Angelic Fervor

The sunset is sacred -- it illuminates our sight.
And we see angelic fervor in miraculous light.
Pure desire,  in purples, oranges and pinks.
Hued rapture that shivers on the skin then sinks down
to the soul, the damp, earthy soul...where just one tinge of colour
can make mortals whole.
Angels around us.
Angels within.
It's the Angels who bring great passion to men.

Death on Dainty Pink Toes

I've seen Death come
  on dainty pink toes.
Gently gathering the spirit as though she's clipping a rose.

And once freed from the Earth,
  its fragrant essence is spread,
saturating the very air from which our bodies are fed.

Breathe in the soul's scent
-- the sweet existence of our lives --
for those we think are so lost,  are simply hidden from our eyes.

Feel them.   Inhale them.  They're in the very wind that blows.
Death is no devouring demon,
  she's just a maid...
    with painted toes.
